The people of planet earth would seem to be on the move! The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre has reported that during 2010 – 2011 alone, more than 42 million Asian and Pacific inhabitants became Climate Migration asylum seekers. Included within this horrifying number are families who have been displaced by storms, floods, heat, unusually freezing temperatures, drought and rising sea levels.
Some climate migration asylum seekers did, however, manage to return home and rebuild their properties. However, because of politics, warring factions, or only because their properties had become too dangerous to live in, some ended up becoming climate migrants within their own countries many of them destitute and totally ignored by their own governments, many more were forced to leave their countries and join the millions of climate migrants seeking better lives elsewhere.
The well respected National Geographic Magazine were very quick to report that there are more than 20 million environmental refugees worldwide, The United Nations for their part state that there are more climate migration people displaced by ecological chaos brought on by Climate Change and Global Warming than people who have been evacuated by war and political repression. Both are quick to explain that climate migrants do not fall under any refugee status so they cannot enter any country and claim asylum, most are merely turned away or forced into temporary shelters in a sort of no man's land.
Both organisations are urging the UN and individual countries from around the world to enter into a new agreement and change the refugee status laws, to reflect the climate migrants plight. They are also urging all countries to take in a specific quota of climate migrants geared to the size and wealth of their countries.
Until a global agreement can be reached to help climate migrants, I am afraid their plight will only get worse. As it stands now, Climate Migrants according, to the international refugee law are not legally considered refugees. In other words, they have no rights.
